Process for Filing an Updated Income Tax Return (ITR-U) Using Spectrum CLOUD ITR

This guide outlines the step-by-step process for filing an Updated Income Tax Return (ITR-U) using the Spectrum CLOUD ITR software.
An ITR-U is filed under Section 139(8A) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, to update or correct information reported in a previously filed return, subject to the applicable provisions and conditions of the Income Tax Act.
Step-by-Step Filing Process
Step 1: Log in to Spectrum CLOUD ITR
- Access the Spectrum CLOUD ITR Login Portal.
- Log in using your registered user credentials.
Step 2: Select the Client
- From the Client List, select the taxpayer for whom the ITR-U is required to be filed.
- Select the relevant Assessment Year for which the ITR-U is being filed.
- Open the selected client's return details.
Step 3: Initiate ITR-U Filing
- Navigate to the ITR Summary section.
- Under the Start Filing menu, select ITR-U.
The system will open the ITR-U filing workflow for the selected taxpayer.
Step 4: Select the Reason for Filing the Updated Return
- Select the appropriate reason for filing the Updated Return from the available options.
- Select the reason that accurately represents the circumstances necessitating the filing of the ITR-U, as applicable under the Income Tax Act.
- The available reasons may include, among others:
- Omission or incorrect reporting of income.
- Reduction of carried-forward loss.
- Incorrect rate of tax.
Other applicable reasons as specified in the ITR-U form.
Note: If a return was not previously filed for the relevant Assessment Year, the reason for filing the Updated Return will be automatically selected as “Return previously not filed.”
Step 5: Auto-Fetch Data from the Previous Return
- The system will automatically fetch and populate the relevant income and return details from the most recently filed return, such as the original, belated, or revised return.
- Review the fetched information carefully to ensure that the details correspond to the taxpayer's previously filed return.

Step 6: Update the Income Details
- Click Edit to modify the relevant income details.

- Update the figures, wherever required, under the respective heads of income, such as:
- Salary
- Income from House Property
- Capital Gains
- Income from Other Sources
- Other applicable heads of income
- Ensure that all corrections, omissions, or additional income are accurately reported.
Step 7: Verify the Updated Total Income
Review the Updated Total Income after making the required changes.
- Verify that the revised income reflects all corrections and additional income, wherever applicable.
- Ensure that the updated figures are consistent with the supporting documents and information available for the taxpayer.
Step 8: Review the Amended Income and Tax Computation
Navigate to ITR-U > Amended Income.
- Review the recalculated income and tax computation generated by the system.
- Verify the applicable tax liability, interest, additional tax, and other relevant amounts, as applicable.
- Ensure that the computation is accurate before proceeding to the next step.
Step 9: Enter Tax Paid Details under Section 140B
- Navigate to the Tax Paid (u/s 140B) section.

- Enter the details of the additional tax paid, wherever applicable.
- Click Edit to add or update the relevant challan details, including:
- BSR Code
- Date of Payment
- Challan Serial Number
- Amount Paid
Verify the challan details carefully before proceeding.
Step 10: Review and Proceed with E-Filing
Navigate to e-Filing > Review and e-Filing.
- Conduct a comprehensive review of the ITR-U and verify all relevant details, including:
- Personal and taxpayer information
- Income details
- Deductions and exemptions
- Updated income
- Tax computation
- Additional tax and interest
- Tax payment/challan details
- Resolve any validation errors or discrepancies identified by the system.
- Once all details have been verified and the return is ready for submission, click Proceed for e-Filing.
- Complete the applicable e-Filing and verification process through the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
Important Note
Before submitting the ITR-U, ensure that the information entered is complete, accurate, and supported by the relevant records and documents. The taxpayer should also verify that the return is eligible for filing under the applicable provisions of Section 139(8A) and that all applicable tax, interest, and additional tax requirements have been duly complied with.
